Empowering Minds: Our Journey to Becoming Mental Health First Aid Instructors

At Ethos, our commitment to promoting mental health and well-being has taken a significant step forward. Two of our dedicated team members recently completed the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Instructor course. Here, we share their experiences, the course content, and how this training prepares us to deliver essential mental health support to our clients.

The Motivation Behind the Course

The decision to enrol in the MHFA Instructor course was driven by a shared vision of enhancing our offerings and a deep-seated interest in mental health. Additionally, we are fortunate to have an employee with experience in counselling, which further strengthens our commitment and capacity to support mental well-being.

"I wanted this to be an option for a course we could offer, and I have a keen interest in improving and maintaining a healthy relationship with our mental health," one of our team members explained. Another added, "I've had an interest in mental health for a few years now for various reasons, and from discussions with colleagues, we realised it is a course we could deliver effectively in an Ethos way."

MHFA Instructor Course Content

The MHFA Instructor course was comprehensive and structured into two main parts. For the first two days, the instructor delivered the MHFA course, culminating in an assessment at the end of the second day. The next two days focused on an instructor’s perspective, including how to deliver the course to delegates and an assessment on the final day.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Suicide
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Eating Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorders
  • Self-harm
  • Psychosis

The course was both eye-opening and impactful. The staggering statistics about mental health issues and the number of people affected were particularly striking. Our team members shared that the course opened their eyes to various aspects of mental health and how struggles can spiral and affect all areas of life. They also learned different techniques to become more effective listeners, which will be beneficial in potentially difficult conversations.

Completing the MHFA Instructor course has undoubtedly influenced how our team members interact with colleagues. "It's crucial to be mindful when conversing with others since we never know what’s going on in the background. Getting to know our colleagues better will help us recognize any signs of mental health or well-being struggles," one of them remarked.

Both team members are now leading the Ethos Health and Wellbeing arm of the company and are excited to dive into this new role. They emphasized the importance of being mindful and supportive, ensuring that everyone feels seen and heard.

Approach to Personal Mental Health

Since taking the course, our team members have noticed positive changes in how they approach their own mental health and well-being. They are now more intentional about creating time for self-care, especially after long days or trips away. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation has become a key part of maintaining good mental health.

Preparation for Delivering Training

The MHFA Instructor course has thoroughly prepared our team to deliver training to clients. They are now accredited and well-versed in the many do’s and don’ts related to the sensitive nature of mental health topics.

One team member highlighted a crucial aspect of the training: "We are aware of how much ground needs to be covered and have a method to help delegates absorb the information over a few days without letting key points slip out of awareness."

Our Plan for Mental Health First Aid Training

At Ethos, we plan to roll out a mental health first aid course using our engaging, interactive method of delivery. Additionally, we will facilitate courses related to mental health awareness. One of our team members highlighted a common issue with traditional training methods, noting, "Far too often, I have sat in training courses that were too reliant on PowerPoint slides and involved little participation from the delegates. This is why we see a gap in the market where we can deliver this much-needed training in a way that immerses the delegate in the learning."
