Eastern Green Link (EGL2) is a visionary project set to transform the UK's energy landscape with its 2GW high voltage direct current (HVDC) electrical ‘superhighway’ cable link between Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and Drax in North Yorkshire, England. EGL2 will unlock the rich renewable energy capacity of Scotland and significantly increase the UK’s capacity to deliver clean energy for around two million homes in the UK.
In collaboration with Ethos, EGL2 is not only aiming to revolutionize energy transmission but also to establish a culture of safety that permeates every aspect of its operations. Ethos' involvement with EGL2 commenced with the support of the Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) kick-off workshop for the EGL2 project. Subsequently, Ethos delivered Effective SHE Conversation workshops tailored for leaders and supervisors engaged in the EGL2 project. These workshops were designed to equip leaders with the skills and mindset necessary to foster a proactive safety culture within the organization.
The Effective SHE Conversation workshops offered by Ethos focus on empowering leaders to recognize and seize four pivotal opportunities during their workplace visits:
- Continuous Improvement: Listening to the feedback of health, safety and environmental issues and agree the actions, this will help develop a generative safety culture.
- Compliance: Observe behaviours of people and conditions of our assets, and have open conversations with the people in their workplace regarding SSE Standards and expectations, praising the positive and where necessary coaching to improve safe behaviours and safe assets
- Learning: leaders will learn the reality of risk within their business
- Communication: Leaders can communicate their standard in their words, their tone and, most importantly, their actions. Building trust, getting rid of fear and create a culture of open communication.
Delegates participating in these workshops gain insights into the importance of 'felt' leadership, human factors in safety performance, and the cultivation of mindfulness for health, safety, and the environment.
Additionally, Ethos provided Task Risk Assessment Training, a crucial aspect of ensuring safety in operational environments. This comprehensive workshop equips key personnel with the knowledge and practical skills needed to conduct effective task risk assessments. By clarifying a common language of risk and providing tools to define tasks, identify hazards, evaluate risks, and implement controls, the training empowers delegates to navigate risk assessment with confidence and precision.
By partnering with Ethos, EGL2 is not only advancing the frontiers of energy transmission but also prioritizing the safety, health, and well-being of its workforce and the communities it serves. Through a combination of tailored workshops and targeted training, Ethos is helping shape EGL2's safety culture, ensuring that safety remains at the forefront of every endeavour.
